This day means a lot to so many in so may ways. It means to honor the fallen ones, the soldiers who died protecting our country, the innocent lives that were taken in the 911 attacks, the ones that are near and dear to our hearts. It also means the beginning of summer festivities!
We spent yesterday with Al's family and then Stef, Greg and Rose came up as well. I realize that things would be different if the kids were younger and Al would be their stepdad. On paper he would be but for most of the time they refer him as my mom's husband. That's ok but I do see a difference. They know that Al takes care of me and vice versa. Where oh where would I have been without him last year on this day. The relationship that the kids are developing mainly with Al's nieces and nephews is awesome. I believe in my heart of hearts it is one that will always be a "family" bonded relationship. I am not sure what else to call it but it is bonding and that makes me very happy.
Yes Memorial Day was a celebration of the beginning of the end for me last year. This time we were all on our drive into the city for the first of two days of surgery. I have come so far. Not 100% back so far.
So yesterday was full of lots of laughs and on me some tears. It was a day to celebrate Life. And Family. I hope that yours was blessed as well.
